The Australian Defence Force is stepping in to speed up the evacuation of residents who are forced to leave their homes due to flooding.
Community members from Daguaragu, Pigeon Hole, and Kalkarindji will be flown to Darwin in the ADF’s C-27J and C-130 aeroplanes, with Daguaragu and Pigeon Hole communities already being fully evacuated.
As of Thursday evening the ADF has already moved 174 people, with flights from Katherine to Darwin commencing again Friday morning.
The extra assistance comes as Chief Minister Natasha Fyles signed an emergency declaration for these communities after The Bureau of Meteorology issued a major flood warning for the Victoria River.
While in Darwin the evacuees will stay at the Centre of National Resilience in Howard Springs, until emergency services advise it is safe to return home.
Access to the communities currently remain cut off, and assessment teams are being deployed to monitor the situation.
