Murder charges laid over death of Bangladeshi student after alleged Darwin home invasion

A man has been charged with murder over the death of a Bangladeshi student in Millner.

It’s alleged a 29-year-old man broke into a Trower Road share house and assaulted 23-year-old MD Ishaqur Rahman early Wednesday morning.

Police say other residents were woken by noise in their yard and chased the man away, later discovering Mr Rahman was lying in his bed with significant head injuries.

He was rushed to Royal Darwin Hospital in a critical condition.

Investigators set up a crime scene and later arrested a 29-year-old man, who allegedly had possession of items stolen from the home.

The victim, who is also known as Sifat, died yesterday evening from a traumatic brain injury.

Detectives today charged the 29-year-old with murder, aggravated burglary and theft.

He has been remanded in custody to face Darwin Local Court on Monday.

In the wake of Mr Rahman’s death, the Bangladeshi Student Association took to social media saying the whole community is shaken by the tragedy. 

“Let us come together in love and support for his family and friends during this time of grief,” the statement said. 

Mr Rahman, who was studying a Masters of Engineering Degree at Charles Darwin University had only been in the NT for about three months.

Hundreds of university students and staff took a stand against crime yesterday calling on the NT Government to ensure their safety and put a stop to violence.

The University is providing support to the young man’s family, friends and staff.
