Parents and four daughters aged 2 to 9 identified as those killed in Pine Creek crash

Parents with four children from Lajamanu have been identified as the occupants killed in a firey crash near Pine Creek.

The family were travelling in a Mitsubishi 4WD that collided with a road train on the Stuart Highway about 12 kilometers south of the town at 4.15pm September 29.

Both vehicles caught fire after the collision, with experts brought in to recover and identify those in the 4WD.

The truck driver and their passenger escaped with non-life-threatening injuries.

Three weeks on from the crash the Disaster Identification Team has confirmed that a 34-year-old man, 34-year-old woman, and four girls aged 2, 4, 6 and 9 died at the scene.

Acting Assistant Commissioner Sachin Sharma says identification was a very “tedious and painstaking process.”

Commander Peter Kennon adding that the tragedy has impacted a large portion of the remote community.

“The family of the deceased have requested privacy at this time,” Commander Kennon says.

Assistant Commissioner Sharma is urging Territorians to take care on the roads especially with Christmas fast approaching.

“All those six people are not going to be able to celebrate Christmas, not going to be able to see their family members.”

A report is being prepared for the Coroner with investigations ongoing into how the crash occurred.
