NT Police Commissioner Michael Murphy has resigned his Northern Territory Police Association membership following their criticism of his Garma Festival apology.
The Commissioner made an apology speech at the festival on Saturday (August 3), acknowledging past harms inflicted on Aboriginal people by NT police.
In a statement the association criticised the apology, saying it’s not the role of the police to assess the success of federal government directed policies.
They also say the membership wasn’t consulted before the speech.
Commissioner Murphy says he is incredibly disappointed by the statements made by the association.
“I love policing. I know you do too, and I am proud to be your Commissioner,” he says.
“Our shared mission is to serve and protect all Territorians.”
