A light aircraft has been forced to make an emergency landing in the Top End.
The plane, with three people on board, ran into trouble over Galiwinku around 3:30pm yesterday, when the aircraft’s landing gear failed.
The local controller confirmed from the ground that the hydraulics in the front landing gear had failed, and the aircraft was diverted to Nhulunbuy, where emergency services were staged and ready.
Police say the plane had burnt through most of its fuel by 5pm, and was forced to touch down.
The pilot managed to land the plane on its belly with no reported injuries.
