NT Police Association President Paul McCue says an axe attack of officers in Daly River is just one of the recent assaults on police.

He told Katie Woolf the number of assaults on police are escalating and nothing is improving for workers on the frontline.

Mr McCue says a working group, started by the previous Police Minister needs reconvene for an urgent meeting, looking into tougher penalties for assaults.
