The Katherine Education Precinct has been broken into overnight with a car stolen and driven erratically through town.
Watch Commander Richard Howie says police were notified of the theft just before midnight.
“Soon after this time we obtained numerous reports from the public…that this vehicle was being driven erratically throughout the township and in an extremely dangerous way doing burnouts and donuts and things in the street,” he says.
“The behaviour is obviously extremely worrying and places all road users at risk.”
He says police monitored the car and tried to intercept it.
“But on at least one occasion we were driven at in a pretty dangerous manner and they had to take evasive action.”
“The vehicle eventually came to a stop after hitting a gutter causing its tyres to deflate and that resulted in the occupants fleeing into the parkland.”
Police recovered the vehicle but efforts are underway to find the offenders, with Senior Sergeant Howie calling for witnesses.
“We urge anyone with information in regards to this to please contact us on 131 444.”
