Mobile phones will be banned in all NT Government schools from the start of Term 1 in 2023.
Education Minister Eva Lawler announced the change at the NT Education Leaders Summit today.
She says the new policy aims to reduce distractions and encourage social interactions during breaks.
“The constant feedback I hear from teachers and families is they feel powerless to manage the impacts that mobile phones are having on children and young people – the distraction to learning, the bullying, the impacts on mental health,” Ms Lawler says.
“This in turn leads to greater engagement with learning, a reduction in cyber-bullying and increased social skills.”
“This new policy is about creating the best learning environment for all students, and supporting young people to genuinely focus and engage in their learning.”
Under the policy phones will need to be turned off during the day and will remain off limits during recess and lunch.
Exceptions will be made for learning activities, medical reasons and emergencies.
The NT Government says other jurisdictions have similar policies.
