A pedestrian has been killed after being hit by a road train in Mataranka overnight.
The driver allegedly struck the man on the Stuart Highway about 4 kilometers south of the cemetery at 9.50pm.
He did not stop at the scene, later contacting police to report the crash.
Local officers attended and declared the pedestrian deceased, with efforts now underway to identify him.
The truck driver tested negative for alcohol and has undergone blood tests to determine if he was under the influence of drugs.
He is assisting police with their inquiries.
Detective Senior Sergeant Brendan Lindner is calling for information in relation to the crash.
“The investigation is in the early stages and we would like to speak with anyone who saw any pedestrians or parked vehicles on the Stuart Highway south of Mataranka last night to make contact with police on 131 444.”
