John Cena, the iconic WWE superstar, has announced his retirement at the age of 47. Cena, who has entertained fans for years with his catchphrase “You can’t see me”, broke the news during the Money in the Bank Pay Per View event in Toronto. Fighting back tears, he shared with the crowd that next year’s WrestleMania will mark his final appearance in the ring.
Cena’s announcement was met with a mix of emotions from the crowd. “Why now? Because it’s Money in the Bank, the ultimate symbol of opportunity,” he said, visibly moved. “This farewell does not end tonight. It is filled with opportunity. I’m here tonight to announce that in Las Vegas, WrestleMania 2025, will be the last WrestleMania I compete in.” He concluded with a heartfelt “thank you”, receiving chants of “Thank you, Cena” from the Canadian audience.
The retirement announcement didn’t come entirely out of the blue. Cena had previously hinted at his impending departure during an interview on The Kelly Clarkson Show, stating, “50 [years old] is my absolute line in the sand… I would like to try and do it [retire] before that.” Cena expressed a desire to explore other life avenues, including being a great husband and partner.
Following his in-ring announcement, Cena was embraced by WWE Chief Content Officer and former rival, Triple H, who lauded Cena as the “Greatest of All Time” on social media. Besides his wrestling success, Cena leaves a lasting legacy with his extensive charity work, including a Guinness World Record for the most Make-A-Wish Foundation grants, having met 650 critically ill children by 2022.
Cena’s departure marks the end of an era, but his impact on and off the ring will be remembered for years to come.
